Fuchsias Fuchsias for me are the prettiest of all flowers. Their pretty and delicate ballerina skirts come in myriad colours, some with frilly petticoats . The Fuchsia flowers can be found as single blossoms through to the exotic double ruffled blooms.
Fuchsias make great pot plants with a variety of shapes and sizes from trailing plants to striking standards. There is a variety of Fuchsia called Firecracker which has green and pink variegated leaves which is a stunner in any shady spot. Fuchsias prefer a shady environment with cool conditions and need for their roots to be kept moist (not drowning). An aunt of mine used to feed hers cold black tea and she swore that this was the reason that her blooms were twice the size of anyone else’s and that they flowered the longest. She also spent a lot of time nipping off the tips off the plants.
Fuchsias grow fairly easily from cuttings, taken from the soft tips of new growth, it is worth trying some cuttings and so replenish your stock and give some gifts to friends and family.
If you are interested in growing Fuchsias why not find out if there is a fuchsia club near you, where you can glean more information on varieties and how to care for them, most nurseries in South Africa stock Fuchsias.
Where flowers bloom so does hope.
