Pick n Pay has changed more than just their logo.At our local mall we have noticed that Pick n Pay has changed to their new logo on the outside of the building but not at the back of the building nor above the door when entering the shop, inside the mall. Here you can still see the old fashioned, well recognised logo. The interesting change however is that they seem to have either evicted or bought out the pharmacy that has been on the mall premises for years if not since the centre opened. They are now proudly advertising the “Pick n Pay Pharmacy” which is about to open.Even more interesting is the fact that they have seem to have, at the same time, evicted or bought out the local bottle store in the same centre, They are now proudly advertising their new “Pick n Pay Liquor” store. This store is also about to open its doors.Wow! What else is Pick n Pay getting into? What with hypermarkets, supermarkets, family stores, banking, in house magazine and now pharmacies and liquor stores already in their fold, what else can they buy into without owning the world? Someone has been very busy behind the scenes. If everything one hears can be believed, it is rumoured that Pick n Pay will also have in-store chefs giving live cooking demonstrations and lessons. What will this mean for all the small businesses out there? Are they going to be swallowed up by the big corporate machine? What happened to the new laws relating to monopoly in our democratic South Africa, who allowed this to happen? How is the small business to survive in the future? Even more intriguing is where will Pick n Pay stop? Will we wake up tomorrow to Pick n Pay Health Gyms, Pick n Pay Jewellery, Pick n Pay Books, Pick n Pay Travel, Pick n Pay cell phone provider or ISP, Pick n Pay Airlines, Pick n Pay Soccer Club or even shock and horror Pick n Pay TV?2008 seems set to be an interesting year for South Africa.
