Dear diary
All fun and games in this house hold. I am so overdue with my diary sessions but why am I not surprised? With mom being on “planet Pluto”……the “credit crunch” in your human being’s world…..the non existent transport and waste disposal strikes in Durbs and my dear beloved dad still working 8 days a week, as the Beatle song goes. All I can say is thank heavens I am a bird and do not have to put up with what you “earthlings” are going through.
The old folks stepped out yesterday to get me my weekly food. Bless my dad; first thing he always looks for is my speciality…’grendelch’. Low and behold he found 5 tiny ones for fifteen rand…..talk about the “credit crunch”……I am so fortunate……my parents look the other way when it comes to my well being! My ‘grendelch’ is seasonal but luckily I also have a preference for guavas, grapes, prickly pears, my veggies and nuts. Our butcher was so surprised when my dad ordered 4 chops for me, well, according to the folk I am worth it…..not only the ladies with that wonderful cosmetic product!
My dear mom….what can I say……I am really giving her a lot of stick lately! Six months ago she oiled all the doors but remember, us African Grey’s ‘store’ a lot of things, long gone and forgotten….mmm, all of a sudden, every time she opens a door I let go of the most horrendous screech you can think of! Unfortunately for her, I have picked up the sound of a stapler……you try it and listen to that sound and add a ‘high note’ to it. My dad used to play a game on his PC called ‘bubbles’ and now I am repeating the sound of them bubbles on a daily basis. I am really driving the old lady nuts and take note, us African Grey’s do not take lightly to being reprimanded! Hold thumbs for the Sharks today and I hope to keep my diary sessions up to date. Mom has got a few ‘assignments’ lined up….mmm, you must have thought we all emigrated to “Down Under”…..not the case…..she has just been ‘hibernating’…….she is slowly getting ‘out of it’! Excuses, excuses……… Ciao from a sunny but slightly chilly Durbs!

An Australian company has launched a free tool that offers web browsers a world-first opportunity to view the Internet in three dimensions.
Melbourne-based ExitReality said its application allows users to turn any regular website into a 3D virtual environment, where an avatar representing them can walk around and meet other browsers viewing the same website.
Founder Danny Stefanic said that previously only specialised websites such as Second Life and World of Warcraft allowed users to enter a 3D environment.
“ExitReality goes far beyond that. It allows you to view not just one website but the entire World Wide Web in 3D,” said Stefanic.
Exit reality and enter the virtual world of the 3D web
Browsers can use the tool to turn their social networking pages on sites such as Facebook and MySpace into a virtual apartment, where photographs are displayed on the wall and links to friends are displayed as “doors” leading to other apartments.
Users can customise their flats by “decorating” with 3D versions of couches from stores such as Ikea or downloading an e-jukebox to play music clips stored on their personal page.
Similarly, using ExitReality on video-sharing websites such as YouTube creates a virtual cinema, where the browser’s avatar sits next to other users logged on to watch the clip they have selected.
Stefanic said the tool will transform the web from a solo experience into one that could be shared with friends and other users interested in the same content.
“The user can see and share experiences with their friends while chatting with them and other people at either their own website or another billion web pages” - Danny Stefanic
Stefanic says there is a wealth of 3D content on the Internet that conventional web search engines ignored. Such 3D effects made the web more interesting for users, meaning they were more likely to spend more time browsing the page.
“Users would normally spend no longer than a couple of minutes on a 2D website,” he said. “In a 3D environment, this time can extend to half an hour, creating a huge potential for the website owner to maximise user engagement.”

Zoopy started a compettition in the last week of September 2008 that ran to 3 October 2008.
The prize was 100GB bandwidth that could go to either 4 people. The snag was, the person with the most uploaded videos/content is the winner. I see no problem with this as you actually do work for your prize.
JasonZoopy said the late comers could post a blog post, which also counts as an upload, to stand a chance to win a 30GB Webafrica Prepaid account.
The competition thread was located here:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=136846
I will update this post to show if I either got randomly selected, or if I didn't. The great thing about all this is, with more providers moving over to local hosting, this allows the South African ADSL public to save on costs and view an download content at a much reduced rate.
I wish more people will make the move, let's hold thumbs! ;) :D :p

Asian - Mobile Data and the Wireless Broadband Market report (http://www.bharatbook.com/detail.asp?id=82789
) provides an overview of the Mobile Data and Wireless Broadband Market segment across the various markets of Asia. Some 27 Asian countries are covered in the report. It is noted that the amount of information offered is obviously dependent on the relative size of the market in each of the respective countries. The coverage in the report also results in some segment overlap as we see increased convergence in the mobile data and wireless broadband markets.
Mobile data services in Asia
With some 1.4 billion Asians using mobile phones by March 2008, the region’s mobile markets offer huge potential for mobile data services.
The growth of wireless Internet in Asia is being driven by competition in the market place and by the advent of 3G and 3.5G services. Market competition has been driving handset prices and airtime tariffs downward, thus opening up mobile services to wider adoption. Adoption of wireless Internet has started to rise with the overall increase in mobile penetration and as networks are progressively upgraded to next generation platforms.
While 3G licensing and the ongoing launch of 3G services in Asia has certainly been promoting growth of wireless data services, 3G has also been providing opportunities for both wireless access and content providers in domestic markets. In South Asia, in particular, more people own a mobile phone than a PC, giving the delivery of mobile data services huge potential there.
Mobile data is not a new phenomenon in Asia. Regional public networks based on Mobitex technology were established in Singapore, Indonesia and South Korea. Another form of mobile data, the DataTAC network, was made available in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, with network trials in South Korea, Japan and China. The DataTAC networks established in Asia were more extensive than the corresponding networks in either Europe or the US.
An example of widespread adoption of a particular mobile data service has been the SMS capability of GSM and other digital cellular technologies. SMS, which allows the sending and receiving of basic text messages, became very popular throughout Asia, with remarkable growth being experienced in the Philippines and Malaysia, as well as in China.
The business plans of the majority of mobile operators have been built on the assumption that the key to further revenue growth lies in the ability to offer more value-added services and, in particular, access to the Internet. A number of technologies are competing for the region’s mobile Internet market. In Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and a number of other countries, in an effort to chase this market, offerings based on the WAP standard were tried. Apart from South Korea, however, WAP failed to claim any significant share of the market. In Japan, by contrast, NTT DoCoMo launched its i-Mode service and its two rivals –SoftBank and KDDI – launched their own versions of i-Mode with dramatic success, with almost 50% of Internet users in Japan logging on from a mobile using one of these platforms. Another system that has supported mobile data, the GPRS, grew out of GSM. Labelled as a 2.5G technology, it has been adopted in a significant number of Asian markets.
The widespread adoption of HSDPA, a new generation (3.5G) mobile telephone protocol, is also noted throughout Asia. It is an evolution of the WCDMA 3G standard, designed to increase the available data rate by a factor of 5 or more. In effect, it extends the capabilities of WCDMA in the same way that EV-DO extended CDMA2000, allowing higher data capacity (up to 14.4Mb/s). SK Telecom launched a commercial HSDPA network in 25 major cities in South Korea in May 2006, offering customers what it claimed was the world’s first commercial HSDPA-enabled mobile handset, the Samsung SCH-W200. This was followed SmarTone-Vodafone launching a system in Hong Kong in June 2006, providing a data speed of 1.8Mb/s. Others have quickly followed.
Wireless broadband in Asia
After a somewhat tentative start, wireless broadband access in its various forms is starting to take hold in Asia. This has seen a flurry of activity as operators rush to acquire the necessary frequency licences. The sector had experienced problems earlier on involving unreliable equipment and network design faults. These have become things of the past. The challenge still facing the industry, however, is to establish viable business models that allow wireless to compete with the more established service offerings – DSL and cable modem platforms in the case of fixed wireless broadband and next generation mobile telephony platforms in the case of mobile wireless broadband. Wireless broadband systems are expected to eventually become a key feature of the broadband access landscape across Asia. Apart from WiFi and WiMAX platforms, wireless technologies include LMDS and MMDS.
For some years now, despite high equipment prices and security issues inhibiting adoption, wireless broadband services have been appearing in a piecemeal fashion across the region, notably in airport lounges, transport hubs and hotels, particularly offering mobile travellers immediate broadband connectivity.
As with other high technology services, it is the developed economies that have been leading the way in this segment of the telecom market in Asia. At the same time, however, wireless broadband technologies are certain to prove increasingly popular in the developing markets as they offer a powerful means of by-passing the incumbent’s infrastructure, especially the ‘last mile’ and also accessing customers where the incumbent’s infrastructure finds it difficult. These possibilities will become even more attractive as the cost of equipment falls with more roll-outs occurring and the market demand volume rising. This pattern has already started to emerge.
While there has been some activity in the providing of WiMAX networks, the real test will be the advent of mobile WiMAX. The initial roll-out of mobile WiMAX in Asia has begun but it has been a cautious start. The technology continues to be strongly supported at this stage of its development. The big question is whether it will become a mass market platform or simply satisfy a niche market need.
It should be noted that gathering statistics for broadband subscribers in Asia has become difficult with the advent of wireless services and hotspots. One phenomenon that makes it difficult is the practice of service ‘bundling’ by operators. Korea Telecom, for example, had a large number of WiFi subscribers, approximately two-thirds of which were ‘bundled’ as subscribers on the operator’s DSL service.
Data in this report is the latest available at the time of preparation and may not be for the current year.

Fellow South Africans,
I have no doubt that you are aware of the announcement made yesterday by the National Executive Committee of the ANC with regard to the position of the President of the Republic.
Accordingly, I would like to take this opportunity to inform the nation that today I handed a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Honourable Baleka Mbete, to tender my resignation from the high position of President of the Republic of South Africa, effective from the day that will be determined by the National Assembly.
I have been a loyal member of the African National Congress for 52 years. I remain a member of the ANC and therefore respect its decisions. It is for this reason that I have taken the decision to resign as President of the Republic, following the decision of the National Executive Committee of the ANC.
I would like sincerely to thank the nation and the ANC for having given me the opportunity to serve in public office during the last 14 years as the Deputy President and President of South Africa.
This service has at all times been based on the vision, the principles and values that have guided the ANC as it prosecuted a difficult and dangerous struggle in the decades before the attainment of our freedom in 1994. Among other things, the vision, principles and values of the ANC teach the cadres of this movement life-long lessons that inform us that wherever we are and whatever we do we should ensure that our actions contribute to the attainment of a free and just society, the upliftment of all our people, and the development of a South Africa that belongs to all who live in it.
This is the vision of a South Africa that is democratic, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous; a country in which all the people enjoy a better life.
Indeed the work we have done in pursuit of the vision and principles of our liberation movement has at all times been based on the age-old values of Ubuntu, of selflessness, sacrifice and service in a manner that ensures that the interests of the people take precedence over our desires as individuals.
I truly believe that the governments in which I have been privileged to serve have acted and worked in the true spirit of these important values.
Based on the values of Ubuntu, the significance of which we learnt at the feet of such giants of our struggle as Chief Albert Luthuli, OR Tambo, Nelson Mandela and others, we as government, embarked, from 1994, on policies and programmes directed at pulling the people of South Africa out of the morass of poverty and ensuring that we build a stable, developed and prosperous country.
Accordingly, among many things we did, we transformed our economy, resulting in the longest sustained period of economic growth in the history of our country; we introduced an indigent policy that reaches large numbers of those in need; we made the necessary advances so as to bring about a developmental state, the better to respond to the many and varied challenges of the transformation of our country.
This is, of course not the occasion to record the achievements of government. An additional critical few are however worth mentioning. They include our achievements with regard to many of the Millennium Development Goals, the empowerment of women, the decision to allow us to host the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and our election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council two years ago.
Despite the economic advances we have made, I would be the first to say that even as we ensured consistent economic growth, the fruits of these positive results are still to be fully and equitably shared among our people, hence the abject poverty we still find coexisting side by side with extraordinary opulence.
Importantly, we had an obligation to ensure that democracy becomes the permanent feature of our lives and that all our citizens respect the rule of law and human rights. This is one of the cornerstones of our democracy, which we have consistently striven to protect and never to compromise.
We have also worked continuously to combat the twin challenges of crime and corruption, to ensure that all our people live in conditions of safety and security. We must admit that we are still faced with many challenges in this regard.
Work will therefore have to continue to strengthen and improve the functioning of our criminal justice system, to provide the necessary resources for this purpose, to activate the masses of our people to join the fight against crime and corruption, and to achieve new victories in the struggle for moral regeneration.
With regard to the latter, our successive governments from 1994 to date have worked consistently to encourage the entrenchment in our country of a value system whose observance would make all of us Proudly South African, a value system informed by the precept of Ubuntu - umuntu ngumuntu ngabanye. Among other things this means that we must all act in a manner that respects the dignity of every human being.
We have sought to advance this vision precisely because we understood that we would fail in the struggle to achieve the national and social cohesion that our country needs, as well as the national unity we require to enable us to act together to address the major challenges we face.
Fellow South Africans,
Since the attainment of our freedom in 1994, we have acted consistently to respect and defend the independence of the judiciary. For this reason our successive governments have honoured all judicial decisions, including those that went against the Executive. This did not mean that the Executive did not at times have strong views which we would have publicly pronounced upon. The central approach we adopted has always been to defend the judiciary rather than act in a manner that would have had a negative impact on its work.
Indeed, on the infrequent instances when we have publicly expressed views contrary to those of the judiciary, we have done so mindful of the need to protect its integrity.
Consistent with this practice, I would like to restate the position of Cabinet on the inferences made by the Honourable Judge Chris Nicholson that the President and Cabinet have interfered in the work the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Again I would like to state this categorically that we have never done this, and therefore never compromised the right of the National Prosecuting Authority to decide whom it wished to prosecute or not to prosecute.
This applies equally to the painful matter relating to the court proceedings against the President of the ANC, Comrade Jacob Zuma.
More generally, I would like to assure the nation that our successive governments since 1994 have never acted in any manner intended wilfully to violate the Constitution and the law. We have always sought to respect the solemn Oath of Office each one of us made in front of the Chief Justice and other judges, and have always been conscious of the fact that the legal order that governs our country was achieved through the sacrifices made by countless numbers of our people, which included death.
In this context it is most unfortunate that gratuitous suggestions have been made seeking to impugn the integrity of those of us who have been privileged to serve in our country's National Executive.
Compatriots,
Again, as you know, we have often pointed to the fact that our liberation movement has always been pan-African in its outlook and therefore that we have an obligation to contribute to the renaissance of the African continent.
All of us are aware of the huge and daunting challenges that face our continent. In the short years since our freedom, as South Africans we have done what we could to make our humble contribution to the regeneration of our continent.
We have devoted time and resources to the task of achieving the Renaissance of Africa because this is what has informed generations of our liberators, even before the ANC was formed in 1912. We have done this fully understanding that our country shares a common destiny with the rest of our Continent.
I therefore thank the many dedicated compatriots - men and women - who have made it possible for us to contribute to the resolution of conflicts and the strengthening of democracy in a number of countries including the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, C?te d'Ivoire, Comoros, Zimbabwe, Sudan and elsewhere. We have also done this work conscious of our responsibilities as a State Member of both SADC and the African Union.
I would like to thank my colleagues, the many Heads of State and Government on the African continent whose abiding vision is that Africa must be free; that all our countries, individually and collectively should become democratic, developed and prosperous, and that Africa must unite. These African patriots know as I do that Africa and Africans will not and must not be the wretched of the earth in perpetuity.
Similarly we have worked to contribute to the achievement of the aspirations of the countries and peoples of the South, conscious of the need for us to act in solidarity and in unity with the billions with whom we share the common challenge to defeat poverty and underdevelopment.
Accordingly, I depart the Office of President of South Africa knowing that this country has many men and women who have dedicated their lives to ensure that South Africa, Africa and the countries of the South will, in time, manage to ensure a better world for all of humanity.
I depart this Office conscious that the sterling work done by the Presidency, the Ministries and departments, the provinces and local government structures will continue, driven by the determination to achieve the goal of a better life for all.
I am convinced that the incoming administration will better the work done during the past 14-and-half years so that poverty, underdevelopment, unemployment, illiteracy, challenges of health, crime and corruption will cease to define the lives of many of our people.
I have received many messages from South Africans, from all walks of life, through e-mails, telephonically and through cell phone text messages as well as those conveyed through my colleagues. I thank all of you, fellow South Africans, for these messages.
To everyone, and responding to these messages, I would like to say that gloom and despondency have never defeated adversity. Trying times need courage and resilience. Our strength as a people is not tested during the best of times. As we said before, we should never become despondent because the weather is bad nor should we turn triumphalist because the sun shines.
For South Africa to succeed there is more work to be done and I trust that we will continue to strive to act in unity to accelerate the advance towards the achievement of our shared national goals.
In this regard, it may be worth repeating what I said during the inauguration of the President of the Republic in 1999. Using the metaphor of the Comrades Marathon, I said then that:
"Those who complete the course will do so only because they do not, as fatigue sets in, convince themselves that the road ahead is still too long, the inclines too steep, the loneliness impossible to bear and the prize itself of doubtful value."
Once more, I thank you most sincerely for affording me the opportunity to serve you and to serve the people of Africa.
I really want to go swim down here, it's only a 10 min walk from where I am staying. Winter was great, but I'm ready for summer.

Researchers studied 300 children over five years and found that obese kids are inactive because of their weight and not fat as they are inactive. Parents should focus on healthy eating and cutting calorie consumption rather than getting their children engage in sports, according to them. “Our explanation is that fat kids are inactive because they are fat. They find it hard to exercise as they run out of breath and so they don’t. It is getting them to make sure they do not acquire fats through other means in the first place.
“They will lose more weight through healthy, lifelong changes to their diet than physical activity. The most cost effective way of easing the problem would be to put all the money into getting kids to stop eating junk food rather than splitting it between that and getting them active.
“It is tempting to make kids more active but it doesn’t produce the expected results,” The Daily Telegraph quoted lead researcher Brad Metcalf of the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth as saying.
The current research follows a recent British study which has pointed out that overweight kids are actually better off doing less intensive exercises if they are to shed the extra pounds effectively.
But, the study, published in the British Medical Journal, stopped short of saying that physical activity is not at all effective for obese children.

London: A quarter of Britons suffer from ‘junk sleep’, described by experts as sleeplessness epidemic that is costing the British economy millions of pounds in lost productivity.
The epidemic is forcing Britons to take days off work because of exhaustion, a study has suggested. Earlier studies have linked lack of sleep to obesity.
A British survey, commissioned by the nocturnal cramp treatment Crampex, suggested that 15 million workers suffer from ‘junk sleep’ and take days off work to compensate.
“Sleep interruptions such as stress and muscle cramp disturb this function and can be very detrimental to everyday life, making it impossible to be productive at work and maintain a positive attitude,” Chris Idzikowski, of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre who came up with the term, was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail newspaper of Britain.
He said junk sleep was so common it was costing the economy millions of pounds.
According to researchers, stress, noisy neighbours, money worries and long working hours are to blame for the sleeplessness epidemic, as well as the more conventional complaints of muscle cramps, indigestion and small children.
The report said forty-six per cent said they typically got six hours or less each night, while 20 per cent survived on less than five hours’. Two thirds were “regularly” kept awake by stress and worry, with money the most common source of anxiety, followed by work, family problems and health.
Forty-three per cent complained of noisy neighbours, 31 per cent said back pain kept them up, and a similar number had trouble sleeping because their partner snored, the report said.
An earlier survey compiled by the International Association for the Study of Obesity showed fast food and sedentary lifestyle are fast turnings Britons obese, with the British population becoming the fattest people in Europe.
Tackling the obesity problem is set to cost the government in the UK tens of billions of pounds a year by 2050. The government is in the final stages of a plan that envisages giving the overweight financial incentives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Restaurants in Britain may soon be forced to introduce a “traffic light” system to guide diners choose healthy dishes in efforts by the government to fight the obesity epidemic in the country.
The system of “traffic light” labelling would provide diners menu with choice of green, amber and red circles to guide them to the healthiest food in the restaurants.

There are many risks factors for cancer that we cannot change, such as age, sex and genetic inheritance. But there are a few things that we can change to help reduce the incidence of cancer. Personal habits such as tobacco and alcohol use, dietary and physical activity patterns, as well as occupational and en-vironmental conditions, rather than genetic factors play the major roles in the development of cancer. Alcohol is implicated in many types of cancer. Two drinks a day raise the risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus and oral cavity. While tobacco use is the single largest causative factor, dietary modification and regular physical activity are significant elements in cancer prevention.

All of us have heard about it; we’re all aware of it; and yet we choose to ignore it.
But the fact remains: Alcohol makes you fat.
With seven calories per gram, alcohol is far more hazardous to our hips than bread, rice, pasta or any of the other Atkins’-feared foods. And these aren’t calories that can be burnt by an enthusiastic round on the dance floor.
Alcohol is converted to acetate which becomes the source of fuel that your body utilizes.
Our body draws energy from a number of sources such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The body tends to use whatever you feed it. However, when acetate levels increase in the blood, the body stops using any other source and only concentrates on using acetates for all its energy needs.
In essence, the acetate pushes fat to the back of the queue, thus slowing down the process of Fat loss.
Here’s what happens to fat metabolism after the odd drink or two:
• A small portion of the alcohol you consumed is converted into fat.
• Your liver then converts most of the remaining alcohol into acetate.
• The acetate is then released into your bloodstream, and replaces fat as a source of fuel
Not only does it reduce the number of fat calories you burn, alcohol can also increase your appetite levels for up to 24 hours after you finish drinking.
Bar nuts, cheese and the dessert counter then become extremely difficult to avoid.
Some studies suggest that a glass of red wine every day helps lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease; there are numerous non-alcoholic foods, which do this as well.
Despite its small quantity, a single shot of liquor can contain anywhere from 115 to 200 calories. In comparison, a glass of wine contains anywhere from 62 to 160 calories.
Mixed drinks are where the calories really add up, ranging from approximately 280 calories for a gin and tonic to over 800 calories for the frozen, creamy drinks.
Calorie-reducing tips:
• Try alternating alcoholic drinks with low calorie non-alcoholic drinks or water.
• Ask for low cal/diet mixers where possible.
• Avoid pre-mixed beverages as these contain loads of sugar.
• Make your wine into a spritzer (a soda diluted longer drink), or your lager into a shandy (using a diet cola) — both have fewer calories.
• Plan alcohol into your daily calorie quota so you can enjoy a glass or two. If you know you will be drinking during the weekend, try to save some calories each day in advance.
• don’t skip meals to allow for drinks, as alcohol will not satisfy your hunger. A decent meal before you go out will line your stomach and slow the rate at which alcohol absorbs into your bloodstream, keeping you in control of how much you eat and drink.
