Runner up

ScanMyPhotos

As the name suggests they specialize in scanning photos, but they also do a great work of digitizing vhs tapes.

Do you have a bunch of old VHS tapes lying around with videos from your wedding, family trips, or other things you've filmed?

These old tapes have our special memories on them, but they can get ruined over time. Plus, it's getting harder to find something to play them on.

A good solution is to turn these VHS tapes into digital files. But doing this yourself can be tricky, and you might need to buy special equipment.

An easier way is to have a company service do it for you. But how do you know which company is the best?

That's where we can help. We've looked at the 10 best VHS to digital services out there and figured out which one is the best, so you don't have to do all that work yourself.

So, let's dive in and get started!

2) ScanMyPhotos

scanmyphotos logo

ScanMyPhotos started in 1990 as a retail store specializing in photos. Under their original name, “30 Minute Photos Etc,” they offered quick and cheap photo processing for local customers.

When the founders of this company realized that photo processing technology had evolved into a digital age, they reoriented their focus from processing to scanning. This was when they decided to take their company online so it could reach a bigger audience.

scanmyphotos office building
ScanMyPhotos office building

Regarding photo scanning, you can choose to scan individual images or buy their Photo Scanning Box, which can hold about 1,800 photos inside. The standard turnaround time for the prepaid box is 5-10 business days, but they can get it done much faster if you choose the Express Same-Day Scanning, which costs a whopping $195.95 per box. It’s a similar thing with slides, videotapes, negatives, and film.

My biggest issue is that they charge you for returning your original photos, tapes, film, etc. And let’s say you don’t want to pay for the return; well, you’re in for a surprise because they will then charge you for the disposal of the originals. This is not the issue with some other digitization companies.

If you're interested in learning every little detail about the company and how it operates, you can read our ScanMyPhotos review.

What will ScanMyPhotos digitize?

ScanMyPhotos digitizes the following formats:

  • Photos
  • Slides (35mm, 126mm, 110mm)
  • Negatives (35mm, APS, 120mm)
  • Videotapes (VHS, mini VHS, VHS-C, Hi8 NTSC format tape)
  • Film (8mm, 16mm, Super8)

  • Family generation collection is the same as the photo scanning box, but instead of one box, you get six boxes that can hold about 11,000 photos, and it costs $995

In the case of slides, you have two options:

  • Slide scanning box costs $235 and can fit up to 540 35mm slides
  • Pay-per-slide, which costs 21 cents per slide but comes with a minimum order of $20

4) Walgreens Digitizing Service

walgreens vhs to dvd website

Walgreens, a well-known name in the pharmacy sector, has been collaborating with iMemories to provide digitizing services since 2013. This partnership combines the accessibility of Walgreens' physical stores with the digitization expertise of iMemories. However, there are some notable differences between using Walgreens for this service and going directly to iMemories.

One of the main differences is in the turnaround time and price. When you opt for Walgreens, your analog media is first handed over to them, and then they ship it to iMemories for digitization. This additional step can extend the turnaround time compared to ordering directly from iMemories. As for the cost, iMemories offers a 50% cheaper rate when you order directly from them.

However, the advantage of using Walgreens is the option to personally visit one of their stores and hand over your media. This is something that iMemories, being an online-only operation, can't provide. But it's important to note that even though you can hand over your media directly to Walgreens, they still need to ship it to iMemories' headquarters for the actual digitization process. This can be a significant consideration for those who prefer in-person transactions but also want to factor in the time and potential risks associated with shipping valuable or irreplaceable media.

What Does Walgreens digitize?

Walgreens will digitize videotapes, movie film, photos, slides, and negatives. They will also transfer already digitized media from an SD card or USB drive to DVDs or Blu-ray discs for easy viewing on your TV.

Video:

  • VHS and S-VHS
  • Betamax
  • VHS-C
  • 8mm, Hi8, Digital 8
  • Micro/Mini
  • MiniDV

Film:

  • 8 mm
  • Super 8
  • 16 mm

Photos:

  • Photo prints
  • Slides
  • Negatives

Pricing of Walgreens Digitizing Service

Walgreens offers two main options when ordering their VHS to digital conversion service: Preview Online and Direct to DVD or Blu-ray.

With the Preview Online option, you can view your converted media on your phone, tablet, or computer. You can also share your videos via email, text, and Facebook, sort and label your videos, and even edit your videos and customize your DVDs. This option includes 30 days of free online access. If orders are not completed within 30 days, they are automatically processed as Direct to DVD, and there's no additional charge for this option.

Now, let's talk about pricing:

For Videotapes, transferring to DVD costs $24.99 per videotape plus $9.99 per DVD. If you prefer Blu-ray, it's $24.99 per videotape plus $19.99 per Blu-ray.

For Movie Films, transferring to DVD is priced at $19.99 per 50 ft. of film plus $9.99 per DVD. For the Blu-ray option, it's $19.99 per 50 ft. of film plus $19.99 per Blu-ray.

For Photos, transferring to DVD costs $0.59 per photo plus $9.99 per DVD. For Blu-ray, it's $0.59 per photo plus $19.99 per Blu-ray. If you prefer a USB, it's $0.59 per photo plus $19.99 per USB. However, there's a caveat for photo conversion: there is a minimum of 30 photos per order.

So, whether you're looking to preserve old videotapes, movie films, or photos, Walgreens offers a range of options to suit your needs.

6) Memory Fortress

memory fortress logo

Memory Fortress started in April 2009 because they were frustrated with the digitization industry. Companies were charging way too much, took way too long to digitize, and some were even sending the old media to other continents to be digitized by someone you didn't even hear about.

As far as I saw, the turnaround time is maybe the best out of everyone, with 1-2 days for small orders and 4-5 days for larger ones. Of course, if the order is massive, it's 10 business days, but even that is faster than most companies.

What does Memory Fortress digitize?

Memory Fortress will digitize the following formats:

  • Videotapes (VHS, VHS-C, Betamax, Hi8, Digital8, MiniDV, MicroMV)
  • Photos
  • Film (8mm)
  • Slides (126, 35mm half frame, 35mm, 127 slide, 110, super 35mm)
  • Scrapbook (12x12)
  • Negatives (35mm, 126mm, 110mm)

Memory Fortress Pricing

The pricing for videotapes is as follows:

  • 1-3 tapes is $20
  • 4-10 is $18 per tape
  • 11-20 is $17 per tape
  • 21-50 is $16 per tape
  • 51-100 is $15 per tape
  • 101+ is $14 per tape

Here is the pricing for photos:

  • If you choose the 300 dpi option, the price is $0.38 for up to 1,500 photos, and the more you add up, the price gets a tiny bit cheaper.
  • If you choose the 600 dpi option, the price is $0.42 for up to 1,500, and it also gets cheaper the more you add.

For 4,000 dpi slides, the pricing starts at $0.54 per slide for up to 500 slides, and the cheapest you can get is $0.49 per slide for 5,000+ slides.

Scanning scrapbooks at 300 dpi will cost you $1.59 per page and $1.99 for 600 dpi.

If you want to digitize the film reel, it will cost you $0.29 per foot.

And lastly, the negatives at 4000 dpi will cost you $0.75 per image when converting 35mm.

If you want more details regarding the pricing you can find it in our full Memory Fortress review.

7) DigMyPics MemoryBox

digmypics memory box

DigMyPics began its journey in 2002, pioneering the use of barcodes for internal tracking, package arrival email notifications, and more. The company is based in Arizona, where their 'preservation artists' meticulously scan and color-correct all images by hand.

Like Legacybox, DigMyPics offers packages based on the number and type of items you wish to digitize. They boast stellar reviews on Google, with a rating of 4.9 stars. Each package comes with an estimated turnaround time: small packages take about 10 business days, medium ones 12 business days, large 15 business days, and extra-large over 20 business days. Please note that these are only estimates, and not a commitment or a promise to deliver within these timeframes.

8) Kodak Digitizing

Kodak digitizing box

After looking at the Kodak digitizing website I realized something. It looks really similar to Legacybox and Southree.

After further investigation I found out that all three companies are owned by AMB Media LLC. All three companies operate from Chattanooga, Tennessee.

From the looks of it they simply branded their service under three different names with different format conversions and pricing.

They also use the same classic mail-in model that they use with Southree and Legacybox.

Why you should trust us

Since late 2019, I have been deeply immersed in the world of analog to digital conversion. I tried numerous services to see how well they perform. I had countless conversations with fellow nostalgia enthusiasts to learn and experience everything I could when it comes to converting analog media, be it via company services or DIY.

My hands-on experience has allowed me to collect objective data on the performance of these services, as well as any potential issues that may arise over time. I've been able to assess factors such as the quality of the digital conversion, the turnaround time, the customer service experience, and the overall value for money.

But I didn't stop there. I've also paid close attention to the little things that can make or break your experience with a VHS to digital conversion service. I have evaluated the ease of the ordering process, the packaging and shipping procedures, and the user-friendliness of the digital formats provided. I've even taken note of any additional features or services that could enhance your experience, such as the ability to add custom titles or chapters.

In essence, I have done everything I can to ensure that your journey from VHS to digital is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

What to Know Before Digitizing Memories with a Professional Service

As with most digitizing services, it's important to consider your personal preservation goals before choosing a company. In this case, you'll want to weigh the quality of conversion you're looking for, the turnaround time at which you'll need your memories digitized, and the price you're willing to pay.

Quality of Conversion

When considering a company to digitize your precious memories, the quality of conversion is paramount. Different companies may offer varying levels of quality, from standard resolution to high-definition or even 4K for video materials. Look for a service that provides samples of their work or clear descriptions of their conversion process.

Additionally, consider the technology and equipment they use. Modern, high-end scanners and conversion tools can make a significant difference in the final product. If quality is a top priority for you, it may be worth investing in a service that uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure your memories are preserved in the best possible way.

Turnaround Time

How long it takes for a company to digitize your memories can change a lot, from just a few days to many weeks. If you need your digital copies by a certain date, like for a gift or special event, ask the company how long it usually takes and if they can do it faster if needed.

Remember, getting it done faster might cost more money. You'll have to think about how quickly you need it against how much you want to spend and how good you want the quality to be. If you rush it, the quality might not be as good, so try to give the company enough time to do a good job if you can.

Pricing and Packages

The cost is usually a big thing to think about when picking a company to turn your memories into digital files. Some companies have one set price, while others might charge you based on what and how much you want to digitize. Make sure to ask about all the costs, so you don't get surprised by extra charges like shipping.

If you have a lot of things to digitize, some companies have special deals where you can get different types of media done together at a lower price. Look at the different deals and think about what fits best with what you need and how much you want to spend, so you don't end up paying for things you don't need.

Customer Service and Support

Good customer service is really important, especially when you're giving a company something special like old photos or videos to turn into digital files. Look for companies that are easy to talk to, can let you know how things are going, and have people who answer your questions quickly.

You might want to read what other people have said about the company or ask friends if they know a good one. If the company takes the time to help you and answer your questions, it can make everything easier and less worrying, especially when you're giving them something valuable or close to your heart.

Security and Privacy

Keeping your personal stuff safe and private is really important when you're giving it to a company to turn into digital files. Look into what the company does to keep your things safe while they have them, and what they do with them afterward. Make sure they do everything they can to keep your digital files private and safe.

Also, ask what they do with your original things when they're done. Some companies might destroy them safely, while others might give them back to you. Knowing what they do ahead of time can help you pick the right company and make sure your memories and privacy are looked after.

The Bottom Line

When you're deciding on which VHS to Digital service you're going to get, you need to make sure it's the best one because they will be in charge of converting your precious memories.

When you are done reading this article, do your research if you'd like to. Then, compare their features and ask for a price quote from each of them, so you'll know for sure which one is the best VHS to Digital company service.

But if you don't have the time or simply don't want to research on your own, I recommend you go with iMemories.
