Some standard methods include the three main steps:
- Vapor degrease/clean/rinse the parts with appropriate solvents.
- Immerse in a fresh bath of solvent for washing and follow by immersion into a second tank to rinse thoroughly.
- Drying the surface substrate after cleaning away residue from previous process steps or other contaminants.
The surfaces need to be cleaned before and after abrasion to remove any pre-existing contaminants on the surface.
Abrasion can be successfully used to roughen the surface of many plastics, including PEEK, nylon, and polycarbonate. However, caution must always be exercised when using abrasion on certain materials because some may not allow this technique due to their nature which depends on how they're manufactured - for example, silicone is too smooth while other rubbery types are more susceptible.
Step 1: Be prepared
Before you repair cracked or broken plastic, remember that all glues need a clean surface to stick on. A quick cleaning with an alcohol-based cleaner will do the trick nicely.
Step 2: Start Gluing
Once your broken plastic item is ready to glue, put it on an old newspaper or something similar. Then unscrew the glue cap, spread an even line of adhesive onto both damaged surfaces of the material so that they are sealed together for good.
Step 3: Stick parts together
Lining up the pieces and gently pressing them together will cause an immediate bond, but maximum strength is achieved after 24 hours. To ensure you get a perfect seal, store your item lying on one side for best results!
Step 4: Take a break
Put away the pieces of plastic and wait 10 minutes for them to thoroughly bond - that's how long it should take at normal room temperature. The glue will be fully cured in 24 hours.
