For all of us who love cooking on a grill, there’s nothing more annoying than not having proper tools, so we end up using just about anything, even a regular fork, to flip burgers.
A good grill spatula should be thin enough to slip easily underneath burgers, long enough so you can pick those out-of-reach corners, and sturdy enough so it doesn’t bend when holding something heavy.
That is why I set out to find the best grill spatula to satisfy all my grilling needs and, hopefully, yours.

Things to Consider When Looking to Buy the Best Grill Spatula
While there are a variety of factors to consider when shopping for the best grill spatula, it’s important that you find one with features like the ones I’m going to mention. It doesn’t matter if you were planning on using it in your backyard or during a camping trip; all of this still applies.
The type of spatula can make a big difference in how your food tastes and feels, so it pays off by taking some time before buying one for yourself or as a gift for a friend or loved one!

Length
A spatula that is just the right size can make all the difference while flipping those juicy steaks and burgers.
The problem with short grill spatulas is when you’re flipping them, all that grease can drop on your hand if you’re not careful. Let’s also not forget the real issue, and that is heat. If the handle is short, your hand is also closer to the grill, cooking your hand, which you don’t want.
Handle Material
When it comes to the construction of the handle, there are a few materials that you should know about. A good sturdy handle won’t bend when you put a lot of weight on it, while some will, so you should consider that when choosing the best one.
Here is a list of all the materials:
Wood
Wood has the nicest look, but it’s harder to clean the other materials. Some folk will even coat them with some oil for that extra protection.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel has the cleanest look of all the handles and is easy to maintain. The problem with stainless steel is that it can get hot really quickly if it sits too close to the grill, and you don’t want that.
Rubber
Well, rubber is rubber. I don’t know what else to tell you. At least it’s not as hard as stainless steel.
Silicone
Silicone is softer than rubber, making it more comfortable to hold. It’s also easier to clean and better against heat than stainless steel.
Plastic
Plastic is the worst choice here because it’s not comfortable to hold, but it is the cheapest of all the handles and durable.
Drainage Holes
Don’t you just hate it when you move the meat onto a plate and all the excess grease spills on the plate. Well, this is why drainage holes are important.
Then, when you pick up the meat, all that extra grease falls through those small openings leaving you with the perfect amount of oil on your chicken or whatever you were grilling.
It also helps avoid big flare-ups, so you don’t burn yourself or your meat too much.
Head Size
Everyone has had the meat fall from their spatula once or twice. It’s a horrible feeling seeing your precious brisket fall to the ground. Trust me, I know.
That is why having a perfectly sized spatula can make all the difference when holding meat. With a wide enough spatula, flipping or moving is a breeze compared to a tiny one.
Additional Features
Some spatulas like the one in this article have multiple uses. For example, one might have a bottle opener while another a serrated edge. These addons make it easy and convenient for you when you’re grilling.
Don’t forget about the hanging hole cause that thing is handy when you want to hang it somewhere after you’re done using it.
Grip and Ergonomics
Grip and ergonomics might not be important to you, but nonetheless, here are some things to consider when buying the best grill spatula.
Just as length plays a role in keeping your hands from burning, so does the ergonomics. For example, many spatulas feature stepped or angled handles that keep your hands away from the grill when you’re flipping burgers.
Let’s not forget about the grip. You can find a good grip on silicone and rubber handles and even some stainless steel ones where there are small sections intended for fingers.

Best Multi-Purpose: FlipFork Boss 5-in-1 Grill Spatula
If you hate using multiple tools while grilling, then FlipFork is the perfect choice for you. FlipFork Boss features five tools in one: spatula, fork, knife, tenderizer, and bottle opener. The convenience that you get from this grilling spatula is amazing.
The handle is made from Acacia wood and is super comfortable to use. It’s also easy to clean because of the stainless steel body and premium wood finish. The entire spatula is 18″ long, and the head is 3.8″ wide. I love the bottle opener. There is nothing more satisfying than having a cold one while I’m grilling some food and the fact that I can open a beer using the FlipFork Boss is amazing.
You can find more information in our in-depth FlipFork review.
Pros
- It’s made from durable materials like stainless steel and acacia wood
- It fits nicely in the hand
- It’s cost-effective, seeing as it has 5 tools in 1 grill spatula
- It can withstand temperatures up to 1000 degrees
Cons
- You have to be careful with the knife because it’s exposed on the left side of the head
Best Value: OXO Good Grips Grilling Turner and Tongs Set
OXO Good Grips is the only spatula on this list that comes as a 2-piece set. The set includes a spatula and tongs. Both items are made from durable stainless steel with soft non-slip grips for secure burger flipping. Even though it’s made from stainless steel, it’s still light and feels comfortable to hold in hand.
The spatula has big drainage holes so the grease can fall through easily and a serrated edge so you can cut into the meat to check if it’s cooked properly from the inside. OXO says the set is dishwasher safe, so I decided to try it after a good day of grilling. I was not disappointed. No matter how much grease and the bbq sauce was stuck on the spatula and tongs, it always came out clean, looking all shiny and new.
Pros
- Great value because you get a spatula and tongs
- Versatile
- Comfortable to use
Cons
- None so far
Best Wide: Weber Precision Grill Wide Spatula
I don’t have to tell you about Weber. You probably know who they are, but just in case you don’t, here it is. Weber is one of the leading grill brands. They make everything from grills to cookbooks but enough about that. Let’s talk about their precision wide grill spatula.
This spatula stands at the top when it comes to lifting and moving large cuts of meat or delicate fish easily. It’s bigger than any of the spatulas that I’ve seen. It’s made with heavy-duty stainless steel and a soft-touch handle that makes it easy to handle food with minimal effort.
The front and sides have beveled edges so you can make easier and more precise flips. It has a metal loop at the top of the handle for hanging it, and it’s safe to wash in a dishwasher.
Pros
- 2-year warranty
- Great for turning pizza
Cons
- Even though it’s heavy-duty, I had some issues with slight bending when holding hefty food like a brisket
